CINERAMA

a short interview with CINERAMA

i was privileged enough to, despite being sick, catch 1 of CINERAMA's 2 nights at the Bottom of the Hill in San Franciscy in Fall 2000.
i spoke to yr man and ours, David GEDGE (the man behind THE WEDDING PRESENT), who due to his being short for time before he went on stage, was kind enough to e-mail me his responses. (every so often we here at p.m.r. interview a new band - the 5 W's & How?, plus a story about that age-old indie-rock institution, crashing at people's homes on tour.) voila.

who: David Gedge (guitar, singing, hygiene), Sally Murrell (keyboards, singing, salad), Simon Cleave (guitar, driving, paintings), Terry de Castro (bass, backing vocals, lies) and Kari Paavola (drums, prima donna-isms).

what: A unique blend of twangy spaghetti western guitar pop and adventurous, sexually charged lyrics, set against a huge, ornate cinematic backdrop... all served on a bed of Albini flavoured dynamic thump in a genuine James Bond movie set. With fries.

when: The Fall. An old English word which the English don't use any more.

where: Where the rubber meets the road... throughout the United Kingdom and the United States. A special relationship.

why: To find the most beautiful women in the world. Jack Kerouac said they were in Iowa, and we just ate breakfast there.

how: Throw a Finn, an American, three Britons, half a dozen guitars, a drum kit and some samples into a 2.5 ton Dodge Ram and press "cruise".

"We had a pizza in Las Vegas, but didn't do any gambling. Highlights so far include the co-headline show in San Francisco with Broadcast, hot weather and blizzards. We were pulled over and searched by the Highway Patrol on our way to Mt. Rushmore, and we played in a haunted venue in Kentucky. People came to our Chicago show dressed in Halloween costumes... including a 'murdered cheerleader'... nice."
