CORNERSHOP brought their swirling psychedelic ethnic cleansing of sorts to Loppen Christiania in mid-march, and i caught a few words with their frontman extraordinaire, Tjinder Singh. (this is a new feature here at the home of p.m.r. - every so often a new band will be interviewed - the 5 W's & How?, plus a story about that age-old indie-rock institution, crashing at people's homes on tour.) action!
who: i don't know who we are
when: since late 1992
why: because Natty sat upon the rock
how: with militant beats
where: leicester
what: reformed shoplifters
"we stayed with people from monoland the last time we were here. we started out staying on a lot of people's floors, like gary from ouiiija records. yeah, that's in london. with three i's.
well, we used to tour around in an old ice cream van. there would be one
bunk there, and it would be really cold, because there was a big gap in
the airshaft, and the air was coming in."
("were there five of you in the band at that point too," i
ask?)
"yeah, but a different five. so this van kept breaking down on
the autobahn and everything. it was a bit of a hazard."
("was it covered with colourful cornershop decoration," i
ask?)
"no, we didn't want to attract more attention."
